A Faith/Angel with Buffy/Spike header for clawofcat
29th-Aug-2008 09:21 pm
Before operation the second went down, awesome beyond wordsclawofcat asked me if I could make her a new LJ header as a birthday present. Yeah, I know, it truly is a great honor. I really wanted to a. Give it my best shot and b. Finish it before going back to the hospital aka before her actual birthday, but I was just too damn slow. Except it wasn't just that I was slow. There were many unexpected difficulties I was facing. First of all there was the fact that the header was to feature Faith/Angel with Buffy/Spike. There's obviously nothing wrong with it in itself, but after making an F/A manip I didn't seem to be able to make a B/S one that'd go together with it. I spent an idiotic amount of time trying, though. Then I made a new F/A one. There was something off about it. Then I went back to the original one, made one more Spuffy manip, but it just didn't fit the occasion mood-wise. And then – aaaaargh, what the hell is wrong with me?! Apparently I can rather do a downright ridiculous amount of manips than one header. Jeez! At the end, however, I had two manips that I thought would go together alright and had the right kind of atmosphere going on, but then I was totally inadequate to squeeze them into a header sized canvas. They were so differently cropped to begin with and different quality and gah, just of the wrong shape. I gave up on them like a million times until this afternoon something clicked. Woohoo and then some! I've been working on it ever since (except for the multiple mandatory nap breaks) and I think it's finally finished and ready now. I hope it's to your liking, but there's absolutely no pressure to use it if it doesn't feel right. Also, I kinda suck with adding text to anything, so if you wish any changes to it just let me know.

Click on the thumbnail to see the it in full size.

Here's also a link to the original Spuffy manip (which is obviously yours, too).

And after all this ranting and fuss: Happy belated birthday, hon! You're a masterful writer – talented, insightful, original and deep. Every single piece I've ever read from you has left me in absolute awe. And, on top of that, you're a wonderful, interesting person with a heart of gold and I consider it a great pleasure and honor to know you.
Thank you so much for the amazing fics and just for being who you are! *hugs and smooches*

Oh those are both great!! Thanks for including the Spuffy manip as well. She's going to love those!
29th-Aug-2008 10:00 pm (UTC)
Oh, I'm so very happy not to mention relieved to hear you think so! I felt so damn rusty and just generally disoriented while I was trying to put them together that it really freaked me out. I was like "Is it all gone? Can't I do these things anymore? Aaaaaargh, I'm doomed!" Lol! So yeah, it really means a great deal to me to hear you think they turned out alright.

As for the Spuffy manip, I thought it might make sense to include it to the post because a. I had to size it down for the header purposes, and b. I find the base pic pretty intriguing in itself. I'm glad you found it to be to your liking, too.

Many thanks for the lovely comment! I truly appreciate it. :)

Oh, be still my heart. That is gorgeous. Very primal. It's such a wonderful contrast, too, between Spuffy (who look like they're being so freakin' intense) and pensive Faith and Angel who are just there for each other, grounding each other. That's exactly how I see them. They're the calm couple. *wibbles* It's really beautifully done. The purple foresty background also has such an alluring quality about it. Very dreamy.

I'm so astounded that you tried numerous manips before settling on this one. I'm half torn between wanting to see the "rejects" and feeling guilty as hell that you were slaving away to such a degree!

Thank you so so much for putting the work you did into this. When I get home tonight, I'll try and put it up. Which should be interesting since I could barely manage it the last time and needed tamakin to come to the rescue, lol.

The manip also is so hot! I love that Spike has a reflection in the glass, that he's human. It made me think of my "All Wrong" 'verse with half-shanshued Spike. You are just incredible. Would it be possible to also make a little icon of that manip with my name? And have the manip personalized so that it says "Passion" on it?

Oh, this is going to be fun! I can play around with my LJs color scheme and everything! *claps hands*

Your keep truckin', you fighter! *snuggles*

First of all: Oh God, I'm so relieved to hear you like it! I'm sooooo relieved! *closes eyes for a moment and just breathes really thoroughly* Uh wow, I hadn't even realized how tense I'd gotten at some point. But it's all good now and I'm starting to feel like beaming and squeeing and throwing high fives with my crutches...all the good stuff. It's a full-on yay-fest in here! :D

It's such a wonderful contrast, too, between Spuffy (who look like they're being so freakin' intense) and pensive Faith and Angel who are just there for each other, grounding each other. That's exactly how I see them.

I'm absolutely delighted to hear this! I really wanted to get the dynamics right between the two couples as well as the two parties of each couple. Every time I felt as if I had reached a dead end I visited your journal and read you Faith/Angel and Spuffy stuff and just let it guide and inspire me. I found it greatly important that the manips I'd be using would somehow mirror the way you convey these couples in your fics. And so I'm extremely happy to hear I'd understood something essential about it.

As for the rejected ones, well, there's a reason they ended up in that folder. Two of them were just off and I'll be happy if no one (including myself) has to ever see them again. And the ones that weren't off but just didn't go together or were too fluffy or too something else - those or at least some of them I'll hopefully finish some day as individual manips. At this very moment I only have loads of unfinished, dysfunctional headers, and, buried somewhere amongst all that stuff, the original manips - finished manip- but not color- and/or background-wise. (Yes, I'm indeed the most disorganized person in the world.) But if the header-rejects start making it to the side of the accepted ones, I'll let you know. ;)

I'm glad you like the original Spuffy manip as well. I thought it might make sense to include it to your gift because a. I had to size it down for the header purposes, and b. I find the base pic pretty intriguing in itself. I love the fact that Spike has a reflection, too, even if it is, you know - a reflection. But then again there's indeed your All Wrong -verse which sort of makes a reflection having Spike all right, lol. I'll try and get the icon and the personalized Spuffyness done tomorrow/as soon as possible. :)

And last but not least: Thank you so much for all the most wonderful and amazing compliments you've given me and my work! It means a humongous deal to me and I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart! *huggles and snuggles*

Finally, here's your icon:

And the personalized Spuffy manip.
Oh, and I still suck at text-adding, so if they're not working just let me know and I'll change them. :)

31st-Aug-2008 07:35 pm (UTC)
Beautiful. Thank you so much, darling. It'll be my new default icon ;)

I feel like such an ass about asking since I don't want to seem like nag or make you exert yourself while you're on the mend, but I just realized I actually don't have any personalized Fangel icons. Whenever you feel up for it, could you also make an icon of the Fangel manip, too? It's not urgent, at all.

Happy Sunday!
2nd-Sep-2008 05:27 pm (UTC)
Yay, I'm glad you like the icon! :D It's kinda new territory for for me, making icons that is, and I find myself a bit baffled in the face of the tininess of the format in question. But it's also fun to try out new stuff.

I'll try and dig up the original Fangel manip from under whatever pile of files it's hiding - I know it's there somewhere. And when I find it, there'll most certainly be a personalized icon on it's way to you. And please don't feel bad for asking - I'm glad you did (ask). :)
4th-Sep-2008 10:24 pm (UTC)
Okay, here's your personalized Fangel icon. I found this manip a bit harder one to make into an icon because of its shape (a rectangle) and also because their faces are in the opposite corners of the said rectangle aka kinda far away from each other. So the results are, er, what they are... *g*

As always, if it's not to your liking just let me know and I'll try something else.
29th-Aug-2008 09:04 pm (UTC)
oooo that looks stunning! I adore the colouring and use of texture. clawofcat is lucky indeed!

Glad to see you around and about too :)
30th-Aug-2008 03:19 pm (UTC)
Oh, I'm so happy to hear you think so! *beams*

It's especially wonderful to hear that you think that the textures and the coloring work for they really gave me hard time. (And I was really uncertain about the results even when I was finished with them.)

Thank you so much for the loveliest comment! I really appreciate it. :)

And it's truly wonderful to be around and about again, even if I'm still a bit too stiff and sore to participate as much as I'd like to.
30th-Aug-2008 09:52 am (UTC)
wow, love both of them. Really well made. Good to see you posting again!

30th-Aug-2008 03:29 pm (UTC)
What a lovely compliment - thank you so much! *beams*
I'm really happy to hear you find these to be to your liking. :)

It's indeed wonderful to be posting again even if I'm still a bit too much of a convalescent to participate as much as I'd like. But I'm getting there - slowly but surely.
30th-Aug-2008 12:49 pm (UTC)
WOW!!! This is totally brilliant... not that you've given me reason to expect any less from you!

*squishes gently*
30th-Aug-2008 03:42 pm (UTC)
Really? Yay, yay, yayness all around! :D I'm so happy to hear you think so. *beams*

Thank you so much for your super-kind words, hon! Your lovely comments they just can't help but making my day! *huggles*

Many thanks for taking the time to come over and see my stuff. I really appreciate it. :)

Also - wait! Wow! I just realized that you're Slaymesoftly as in the writer Slaymesoftly. Let me just say that I'm a great admirer of your work. Would you mind if I friended you? It'd be wonderful to be able to keep up with your writing.
31st-Aug-2008 02:49 pm (UTC)
Of course you can. Please do. :)
3rd-Sep-2008 03:35 am (UTC)
Wow, those are great, especially the Spuffy. Very hot;)
3rd-Sep-2008 06:26 pm (UTC)
Oh, I'm so very happy to hear you think so! *beams*
I'm especially delighted to hear that you think the Spuffy part turned out alright. It was such a hard manip to do thanks to the crazy head angles and my complete lack of skills when it comes to using screencaps. So yay, yay, yayness all around! :D *beams some more*

Thank you so much for the lovely comment! I really appreciate it! :)

Lovely! Being a Spuffy fan I am obviously drawn to that hottness that is side of the banner, but the Angel/Faith is stunning too. I love the use of the black and red in that side.
12th-Jan-2009 06:16 pm (UTC)
What an utterly lovely comment - thank you so much! I'm absolutely delighted to hear that you find this to be to your liking. Yay! *beams*

I'd actually only manipped Buffy and Spike before I set out to make this banner. And as for banner making, I find that I kinda suck at it. It's like the smaller the canvas I'm supposed to stuff things into the more inadequate I feel. I don't think I've ever been quite as anxious about sharing any other manip/artwork of mine as I was with this one. I had a painful knot AND a whole bunch of psychotic butterflies in my tummy all at the same time! It was positively awful, but most definitely worth it. ;)

Thank you so much again! You totally made my day with this comment of yours! *hugs*

LOL It's funny, I've gone in the opposite direction...I started out making an icon or two and have slowly (as my confidence has increased) worked up to a larger canvas...I made my first wallpapers late last year and they were so much fun! I have done one or two manips and come to the conclusion that I have neither the patience nor the eye for detail required...so I content myself with admiring other people's manips and marvelling at their skill.

Really? Wow, that's so cool! Not to mention fascinating! :)
And let me just say that I greatly admire people with icon making skills. I love icons, but making them makes me feel as if I was trying to climb up a tree ass first. It's hard as hell, more than a little frustrating and the results tend to be dodgy at their best. It kinda leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth if you sweat blood for hours only to end up with one really sad looking almost-icon, especially given that there are such amazing icon maker out there (yourself included).

I consider myself first and foremost a manipper. I love thinking up ideas/concepts for manips, I love searching for fitting base pics, and I'd like to think that on a good day I can be a decent enough manipper. I'm also crazy about playing with colors especially now that I have PS7. (At the time this banner was made I only had PSPX.) But that's about it. I suck at composition, I majorly suck at text-adding, and even though I like using textures I'm still quite awkward with them, too.

I'm in absolute awe of artists like mary5958 and shanmara (just to name a few) who are not only phenomenal manippers but who also have the skills and the artistic vision to take their manips to a whole new level.

What I truly love about this fandom, though, is that there genuinely seems to be room for all kinds of styles and art forms. Whether you were a pro or beginner, or liked working on a smaller or bigger canvas, it's all good. I think it's simply wonderful to see diversity so warmly embraced. :)

Oh wow, that is such a lovely thing to say - thank you so much! I'm absolutely delighted to hear you find the header to be to your liking. Yay! :D *beams*

I'm a Spuffy person myself - it is actually the only pairing I feel passionate about - but as far as OTPs and/or shipping are concerned, I come from the live and let live school of thought. And I gotta say that I do think that Faith/Angel makes all kinds of sense. *nods*

I still make manips, yes. Just not as frequently as I used to. I've been struggling with serious-ass health problems for quite some time, and unfortunately the only progress I've been making so far has been for the worse. So, as flattered as I am that you asked me, I'm afraid I'm going to have to say no. I mean, I'd like nothing more than to be able to make you a Faith/Angel manip. Seriously, I'd consider it an honor. I've just become a bit weary about promising stuff to people, because I hatehatehate not being able to keep my word, and considering my current health situation there's no telling what's going to happen next. And I could never forgive myself if I let you down by promising you something that I won't necessarily be able to deliver.

I'm sorry for being such a party pooper! I SO wish I could've taken this commission, because A. You are clearly awesome, B. Your comment totally made my day, and C. I find the idea of manipping F/A for a change all kinds of beguiling and exciting.

Ugh, I suck so bad it's not even funny. *goes away and hides*
