Kings of Leon icons + RL stuff
14th-Oct-2008 06:35 pm
So, wonders never cease, it appears. I've always been a huge "I can't make icons for the life of me" -person, totally baffled by and out of my depth with the art of icon making. Icons are so incredibly small that finding a way to turn any picture at all into one has always seemed like rocket science to me. And yet here I am with my first ever (and quite possibly the only) batch of icons. Something must be terribly wrong with me. *g*

The thing is I've been feeling really tired lately. Super-tired like. It's mostly due the medicine and the chronic fever and the pain induced lack of sleep, I'm told, but whatever the cause it's not fun. I'm frickin' useless most of the time, and I simply hate being that way. Grrr! Anyhow, I've been too exhausted to start anything bigger project-wise - and manips are always big projects for me as it takes me at least a week to complete one manip - but since fiddling with my graphics program makes me happy, I've been making one icon here and two there. Mostly it's just been me playing with colors and stuff and ogling at teh pretty pictures while I'm at it, and so I can only hope that they don't suck too badly. Most of these were made with PSP, a few with PS7.

Random teasers:

If, for some strange reason, you were to find yourself wishing to snag any, snag away by all means. I'd really appreciate it if you could credit me when using.

1-4: Ooh, it's almost like they make a whole!
5-9: Randomness
10-32: Caleb Followill
33-39: Nathan Followill
40-50: Jared Followill
51-57: Matthew Followill
58-62: I found this KOL Saturday Night Live promo pic utterly hilarious in the best possible tongue-in-cheek way, and decided to try and make them look even more cartoon-like. Many thanks for sarah_fn_rose for sharing the SNL pics and caps at kingsofleon.

You've got some nice cropping going there! Much better than what I first started out with. Icon making is such fun, I hope you keep at it. My advise would be to browse icon tutorials first, I learned about a lot of effects and trix that way ;)

This one is a brill guide to get started on, and you'll find a lot of different tuts here.

Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement! I don't think I've been this nervous about posting something since I made my first fanart post. I mean, there are such amazing icon makers out there, such pros - yourself included - and I'm like...nobody. I know nothing about icon making and, to be honest, I kinda suck with the cropping and composition stuff even with my manips. This whole icon making thing of mine started simply because I couldn't find the kind of KOL icons I wanted. And after making a few I realized that it was different (from what I usually do) and fun, and then it sorta escalated. I kept telling to myself, though, that every woman to her craft, and was 100% sure that I'd never show these to anyone, but then yesterday I thought - What the hell, it wouldn't be the first time I make a fool out of myself if it was to come to that. And maybe, just maybe, there might be some other KOL-icon-needing person out there who could enjoy these too.

Cropping the pictures is so hard. And it wasn't as if I was drowning in the usable pictures. Besides the obvious promo pics and magazine scans I used a lot of screencaps from interviews and stuff, and some of them were of the really bad quality (like youtube vids -bad). Also, I noticed that 1. There are no colors at all in the most of the promo shots. They're either grey-ish and/or super-contrasted. And 2. Majority of the promo pics appear to be taken from really strange angles and/or are weirdly cropped to begin with. Like with the first four, there was nowhere to go upwards or downwards, which kinda bugged me, but I liked the way the color-effect-whatever-thingy turned out so once again I just thought what the hell. There's been a whole bunch of what the hellism going on in my life lately. Lol.

Anyway, thank you so much for the lovely comment! And for the links too! You rock! *hugs*

Icons have always been a little bit beyond me too. ;) Congratulations on stepping out of your comfort zone! You did a great job, sweetie, especially for a first stab at it. I like the cropping and the posing. You've got a good eye for perspective.

Thank you ever so much, hon, you totally made my day with your kind words! *huggles*
I was, like, so totally anxious about sharing these icons. I hadn't been planning on doing so, and even after I'd decided to ignore my insecurities and post them anyway, half of the time I've been sorta hitting myself in the head for not staying to my craft. It so scary (but quite necessary in the long run, I reckon) to indeed step out of one's comfort zone and try new stuff and see what come out of it being it for better or worse. But jeez, icons are still like the most unlikely water for me to dip my feet in ever! It's so weird to even think about it, lol. And I can't even begin to tell you how much it means to me to hear that you find the results to be alright. Many many thanks you wonderful you! *hugs and smooches*

Awww. *blushes* You're the loveliest, you know that right? *huggles*
Thank you ever so much, sweetie! It makes me super-bouncy-beamy-happy to hear that you approve. Yay! :D
I honestly can't think of a more unlikely water for me to dip my feet in than making icons, and was so totally anxious about sharing these. I had a painful knot AND a whole bunch of psychotic butterflies in my tummy all at the same time. *g*
I'm glad you like the colors in 46 and 47. They both just sorta happened, lol. Nice lil' accidents. In fact, that's how most of my coloring stuff comes along. ;)

Oh thank God, I'm not the only one then! I've always thought that everybody else is like totally super-cool when they're posting stuff whereas I'm climbing the walls out of anxiety. During my first couple of LJ months I kept telling myself that it'll get easier with time, but my ass it does! I'm still a nervous wreck who pretty much just wants to run away and hide every single time I'm supposed to be posting something. And I'm always dreaded by the comments too. Always. It's like on the one hand you're hoping that someone'll see your art work and tell you what they think, but on the other hand even the thought of the possibility of comments scares the crap out of you. It's just crazy, the whole situation!

Your new stuff is indeed pretty damn good! Or, to be more precise, it's pretty damn fantabulous! But then again I've always been enjoying your art. I couldn't make the stuff you make, and I truly admire your talent.

It's an endless learning process to us all, I reckon, this art making thing, and there has to be room for that as well as there has to be room for all kinds styles and art forms. Diversity isn't only a blessing, it's a necessity as far as I'm concerned.

I'm awesome? Nah, that would be you, sweetie. That would most definitely be you! :) *hugs you back*

I was looking forward to reading your reply to my comment all day.
Aww. *blushes* You should see me now - I've just turned into a human shaped tomato at least as far as the coloring goes, lol. Seriously, though, that must be one of the most amazing things anyone's ever said to me. I mean, I'm just me - plain old me with my poor English and rambling thoughts. *blushes, if possible, even more*
I've been wondering for a while now what the time difference between here and there might be? Because it quite often feels as if it was always nighttime here in Finland when everybody else is online.

like the people who don't like James Marsters...are they insane? 0_0 Heh.
There actually are people who don't like JM? Like, for real? Whoa, what a disturbing thought! Lol. ;D

If you saw the same kind of art format for every piece of fanart...well..where's the fun in that?
Amen to that! It would be soooo utterly boring. And stagnant and, in the long run, just plain depressing. I mean, I find it awfully smothering when people are expected to be and act as if they weren't individuals, and I reckon it's kind of the same with art. Both people and art flourish when they're allowed to exist freely. Or that's what I think, anyway.

I think I've already mentioned you what a mathematical genius I am (NOT), but if I'm not completely mistaken there's seven hours worth of time difference between us. Can I just say: whoa! No wonder I constantly feel like was on a wrong schedule or something...

Have you read the reviews of Dragonball?
No I haven't, and now I've got the feeling that I don't even want to. I'm such a sensitive fool that no matter how hard I try to tell myself that I should just let the negative stuff go in one ear and out the other, I just can't help but getting upset anyway. :(

But yeah, I do know that there are people who don't like JM. I mean, my ex boyfriend used to hate him, like, really REALLY hate him. (I was always like: Jealous much? Lol.) I truly don't get the whole hating thing. Why waste energy on hating someone when there's the option of concentrating on being grateful and happy about the ones you love?
15th-Oct-2008 04:44 am (UTC)
They don't suck at all sweetie :)
I really like #21 and #49, even though I don't know these guys at all ^^;;;;;

Thank you ever so much for your lovely comment and encouraging words, hon! I honestly can't think of a more unlikely water for me to dip my feet in than making icons. I was painfully anxious about sharing these, and so it means a great deal to me to hear that you approve.
Thanks again! You're awesome! :)

Aww. *blushes* You just totally made my day, you did. It makes me, like, super-bouncy-beamy-happy to hear that you find these to be to your liking. Yay! :D
Thank you ever so much for your kind and encouraging words! I truly appreciate them! *hugs*

Btw, I love your icon! It's like you just can't help but smiling whenever you see it. And I think I remember seeing it and you at kingsofleon. I've been trying to screw up my courage to post these there as well, but I'm so damn shy and insecure that...well, I'm still working on it. Hard. ;)
15th-Oct-2008 07:28 pm (UTC)
You should def post these in the kings of leon comm, these icons are amazing, i think people are always looking for good icons!...I know what you mean about smiling Jared icon...he's just too lovely ;)
15th-Oct-2008 09:12 pm (UTC)
Whoa, I think I just went and posted the icons at kingsofleon! *is flabbergasted* What the hell is wrong with me? Am I really that anxious to have a heart attack or what?

Joking aside, though, I don't think I can ever thank you enough for being so kind and helping me to get over my shyness and other lovely issues. I'm still going to try, though: Thank you thank you thank you! You rock! :D

19th-Oct-2008 01:27 am (UTC)
Aww. *blushes* Thank you so very much, hon! It makes me super-extra-delighted to hear you think so! I mean, you're such a wonderful icon maker yourself, and yet here you're so kindly complementing my first attempts at the said craft, and it's like whoa! *blushes even more* It truly means a great great deal to me to hear you think they turned out alright. Yay! :D *hugs you soooo tight*

Thanks so much, bb! I am absolutely delighted to hear you found these to be to your liking! Yay! :D *does happydance*

On a related note, I actually managed to make another batch of KoL icons before it dawned on me that it would probably be better if I left the icon making for those with actual talent for it. ;P Nevertheless, if you feel like having a look, the mentioned second batch can be found here at kingsofleon.
