A Spike manip - The Harbinger
5th-Sep-2008 06:09 pm
I feel like I'm starting to get back on my feet again, if not physically yet then at least mentally, and to celebrate that I've been doing some slow but persistent manipping within the limits of my health. I just wish I wasn't so damn rusty and insecure. *fidgets nervously*

Anyway, here cometh the manipness...

Rusty? You? I don't think that's possible. Lovely manip=)

Aww, you're so kind. *huggles*
Thank you ever so much for your kind words - they made me beam like never before! Plus I'm just absolutely delighted to hear you think the manip works. Yay! :D

Oh, and I just love your icon! Was it taken at Dragon*Con, the photo in it that is? God, you and James look so cute together! :)

Don't we? Someone said we look like old friends...lol! And yep, that was taken from Dragon*Con. I just finished posting a long report from it, with lots of pictures=)

There's a report? There are pictures? Woohoo! You're truly wonderful!
I'm so heading to your journal like right now! Many thanks for the tip! :)

Oooh that's gorgeous... and creepy all at the same time. *g* Beautiful as usual.

What a lovely comment - thank you so much! I'm absolutely delighted to hear you find this to be to your liking. *beams*

Also, I'm so very glad that you mentioned the creepy aspect there, because I was sorta hoping there might be a hunch of that, too, within the manip. It didn't want it to be just creepy or even mainly creepy, but to have a couple of spoonfuls of some unspecified unnerving quality to it. So yay to creepiness! :D

Thanks again! You're awesome! *hugs*

Oh. Interesting base. The vortex behind Spike gives the piece such a sense of movement. It reminds me of the portal that is opened behind Angel in "Becoming, II," like he's escaped from hell. Was the raven part of the original image or did you add that? It definately adds some dramatic effect.

My only critique is that the light source hitting Spike's face in comparison to the rest of the piece seems too bright. I don't know photoshop or anything, so I can't make any suggestions to how to tinker with it. But a beautiful, dramatic job, as usual. I like that you take chances. Keep on being adventurous, my darling!

Oh how I love your comments! They're so detailed and insightful, always challenging me to think what I'm doing which I find both inspiring and essential as far as my learning process goes. My most hearties thanks for putting so much effort and thought into it! You're the best! *huggles*

As for your question and stuff, the original base looks like this. So the raven detail is totally on me. I actually had this idea of two counterpart-ish manips - Spike with a raven and Buffy with a dove - but I have yet to find a suitable base for Buffy. Because I want her to be kinda fierce, too, and a bit otherworldly in a chilling kind of way, with cold white light encircling around her. All the otherwise suitable bases I've found so far seem to be seriously lacking in the fierce department, but I'm going to keep on looking...

Then there's the matter of Spike's face and the light source of it. Do you maybe like this better? I have quite a few versions of this manip, and that's the one with his face less exposed. So it was really a matter of choice, my choice that is, that the final version has him sporting a pretty bright face. There really isn't any logical light source to it there within the picture, but as far as the mechanics go his face's reflecting to the same texture that makes the upper side of the circle behind him glow. I guess I figured that he needed to stand out a bit more, but I might've overdone it. *scratches head* I don't know. I'm really going to have to give this some serious thought.

Keep on being adventurous, my darling!
That's the plan! *beams* :)

Oh and by the way I don't know if you noticed, but I posted your Fangel icon here.

Wow. You really did a lot with that original base. It's a very powerful image. The Spike w/ raven and Buffy w/ dove parallel sounds like a gorgeous idea. If I ever see anything I think might be suitable for that, I'll let you know. They could make a stunning pair together.

I do! The colors seem more consistant there. It's so cool seeing the different versions and the base and the final product. How long does it take to complete a project like this? Depending on the fic, it could literally take me 30 minutes to several months, lol.

*nods* Thanks for explaining this. I've taken art history before and my job requires me to be familiar with artwork, but clarification is always good.

And thanks for the icon!

Yay, I'm really happy to hear you think so! This is actually the first time I've ever talked about my ideas with anyone before the actual manipping takes place, and I feel much more confident about sticking to my plan now that I know it's not just me who thinks the idea might work.

If I ever see anything I think might be suitable for that, I'll let you know.
What a kind offer - thank you so much! As far as I'm concerned, searching for bases is one of the hardest and most frustrating parts of the manip making, and so any help would be highly appreciated.

After some serious staring and frowning I've come to the conclusion that you're right about this Spike manip. The alternative version with his face a bit less exposed looks more balanced as a whole. Damn! I mean good, lol, but now I'm a bit puzzled what I'm supposed to do next. Make a new post or change the pic here or leave it be or what. Work brain work!

How long does it take to complete a project like this?
Well, I started to work on this manip the day after I'd finished your header, so it must've taken me a week to complete. Had there been two people there to manip, it would've taken even longer. *is a bit annoyed if not surprised by the realization* I'm sure I must be one of the slowest manippers ever. My only excuse is that it usually isn't the manipping itself that takes so long but struggling with the composition. There really aren't any tutorials out there for us PSP users so I'm pretty much shooting blind every time I want to try something new. Sometimes it feels like I might as well be trying to climb up a tree ass first, but when there are no alternatives you just grit your teeth and keep on climbing, lol.

That makes total sense. I usually go in search of bases if I get an idea for a story banner I might want in the future. Like I said, I'll keep my eye out.

If the other version is the one you want up, just swap it out on your journal. Writers are always tinkering with their stories or editing them, so you could certainly do the same.

I could have sworn that tamakin either has PSP tutorials saved in her memories or has done tutorial posts herself on her own manips. She is such a talent. You should check her journal out anyway, if you haven't already.

I'll have you know I was literally lauging for 5 minutes straight when I read this yesterday at work. In the whole my shoulders were shaking as I tried to suppress the laughter kind of way. The visual is just... *snorts* Made my day with that one, A. *loves*

Hee, I'm happy to hear I was able to make you laugh! Yay to laughing! Speaking of which, I just love your icon! :)

I adore tamakin's stuff! She's actually the reason I started manipping in the first place. I found her journal, fell in love with her work, and after a while I just couldn't resist the temptation of trying it out myself. She's a true genius of a manipper and every time she posts something new I find myself gushing at her art journal both excited out of my head and in absolute awe.

The problem with most of the fanart tutorials out there is that they're made by and for Photoshop users. I'm dying to catch hold of that program, but it's so damn expensive that with my income it takes ages to save enough money to be actually able to buy it. But I'm stubborn if not particularly patient and one day I will get my very own Photoshop and we'll live happily ever after, lol. In the mean time I'll just keep on wrestling with my Corel Paint Shop Pro X, and hopefully something good will come out of it every once in a while. ;)
